On July 21, 1861, two armies clashed for the first time on the fields overlooking Bull Run and in August 1862 they met for a second time. The confederates won a large victory in the Battle of First Bull Run and it is were General Jackson earned his nickname "Stonewall Jackson", Brigadier General Bernard Bee told his troops "There stands Jackson like a stone wall". The nation was shocked by the toll at the First Battle of Manassas, which saw more than 5,000 casualties and really get that feel here when you walk the Battlefield.
